Biography

Marconi Union
“Minimal, introspective, ethereal electronica… Gorgeous” The Guardian

“With it's warm lush drifting character, MU's latest foray into the realms of ambient electronica is likely to attract yet more comparisons with the likes of Brian Eno, John Metcalf and Labradford” IDJ

“Richard Talbot and James Crossley have been melding the finest elements of dub, electronica, jazz, ambient and classical music into dreamy concoctions that lull the listener into a sweet static lullaby from which one would never want to awaken. From the beautiful electronic backdrop of 'Interiors' through to the euphoric 'We Travel' creating wave after wave of musical beauty, as precious as it is wondrous” New-Noise.net

“Lineal and open, the seven compositions migrate between the gently harmonious and atmospheric to the panoramic dark chill of a digital plain. The most essential aspect of this airtight production are the lyrical lead lines that narrate each piece. Melodic lines, not isolated notes, carefully craft noir themes of haunted beauty, and a lovely darkness works its way into each track.” Star’s End

“A concept album shaped around themes of isolation and disconnection, inspired by images of withdraw from the world…sophisticated music…harmonious stillness…” Bert Strolenberg

“Poetic and almost classical” Echoes

Enigmatic and reclusive Manchester based musicians Richard Talbot and Jamie Crossley have consistently avoided publicity and rarely grant interviews. A Lost Connection, their third album, is shaped around themes of isolation and disconnection, inspired by images of withdrawal from the world, a kind of inward journey in which desolation and remoteness are key factors. It is an extraordinary record, developing the themes of social disconnection whilst bringing a Lynchian psychosis to the proceedings. There is something primal here, unusual in contemporary ambient / electronic music and despite the music's apparent stillness it's stunning 'poetic and almost classical' (Echoes) depth and accessibility always manages to take the listener on a journey.

“You can hear echoes of ambient artists like Boards Of Canada and Moby in Marconi Union and they certainly bow at the alter of the ambient creator, Brian Eno. Like those artists, there's a haunting minor key melancholy and many of the sounds seems almost a-musical, born from faulty joints, broken fittings or in the case of the new album, A Lost Connection, its the soundtrack for abandoned factories and dead technology, but one where sunlight is filtering through the broken glass” Echoes

Under Wires and Searchlights, Marconi Union's first album, appeared on the small British independent label Ochre Records in 2003, immediately drawing attention for its combination of synths, guitars, strings and cinematic soundscapes. Released in limited numbers copies quickly became sought after, often changing hands for high prices.

Over the next 2 years their sound evolved in a darker more electronic direction with the release on All Saints Records of Distance in 2006, credited in The Sunday Times Culture Magazine as one of the most successful ambient albums of recent years. Inspired by images of cities and travel its cinematic textures bought them to the attention of a larger audience and inspired widespread critical acclaim particularly in the US and Canada where tracks have been featured in a number of popular US television shows, films, TV commercials and independent arts based projects.

Originally made available in digital format only, A Lost Connection has been remastered by Guy Davie and is now available for the first time on CD and also in high quality digital download format though Linn Recordings.

Marconi Union have played a number of live dates including The Union Chapel, Big Chill and the Eden Sessions and a specially recorded live set for the influential US radio programmeEchoes and they will be playing at various venues around the country after the summer, including the Just Music Cafe Night at London's Inspiral Lounge on December 2nd.

“The atmospherics on this album are phenomenal, with a real sense of “space' ( as in outer) in their stripped down electronic beats. Great album” Subba-culture
