Dan Arborise – OT&T – Internet reactions…

Thursday, September 3rd, 2009
A consultation of the govt approved ‘oracle’ – Google ;) , revealed lots of sites have appeared doing reviews, so lots of reactions to the album so far! interesting stuff! enjoy..

“Showcases phenomenal guitar playing skills but at the same time showing maturity and a song writing nous…and makes it interesting in both a mainstream and underground way…Honestly, Dan Arborise can not be recommended enough ….Of Tide & Trail should be an album that everybody quotes as legendary and nothing less.” – God is in the TV

“When you listen to the intro of ‘You’ll all get what’s coming to you’ you start to realise that this isn’t your run of the mill ‘singer/songwriter’ this guy has serious talent and plays the guitar with a fluidity I haven’t come across in a long time. Listening to his folksy/ambient style makes you want to pick up your life, head to the coast and live life in the country” – noizemakesenemies

“Arborise is working with nature here and deftly employs the organic rhythms and tempos of the tide and body…it represents the perfect antidote to the rat-race; not a single note is hurried and every phrase is afforded time and space to breathe. Songs which in other hands might have withered after 3 minutes are, here, allowed to linger and mature…. Quite simply, this album is revelatory and won’t be straying far from my stereo for quite some time; a definite candidate for my album of the year so far.” – The Music Fix

“There’s a twinkle in Dan Arborise’s song writing that can be found in few other places…has a charm and dreamy wisp to his sound and translates his inspiration of open country side and detachment from the urban savannah of city life into open and intimate songs….an ethereal and evocative blend of acoustic mastery and Arborise has his finger on the pulse, even if he is off the beaten track of mainstream folk..” – tv dub

“This piece threw a curved ball at me, expecting as I was yet another folkish pretender to the throne left empty by Martyn and Drake. Certainly those influences come to play here yet there is something very direct and beguiling about the songs. Arborise seems to have a refreshing disregard for whatever else is going on outside the confines of his own world…..It is all very organic and infused with positivity. A holistic listening experience, never underestimate the healing properties ot a lovely voice and a well crafted song played on an acoustic guitar.” – subba cultcha

“In his best songs he has a real mastery for lyrics that hold no mention of modern life and yet remain completely relevant …. The album starts off promisingly with a handful of great folksy tunes. You can’t help but enjoy the way the man plays guitar and since it’s all a combination of his voice and his axe, there is always an impressive fluidity to his songs…It all starts to get a tad self-indulgent as you edge towards the end of the album though.” – in thenews.co.uk

“And therein, maybe, lies the problem. Where some of the more popular folk songwriters of the moment, such as Newtown Faulkner, can tailor their songs to radio-friendly format, Arborise likes to indulge himself.” – IndieLondon

“Instead of an organic, DIY feel, the production of Of Tide And Trail, his second outing, creates a glimmering backdrop of carefully placed layers of guitar and swelling Harmoniums each playing it’s own part, especially on I Live. It takes away the tone that goes hand in hand with this style of folk.”– The 405

“An acoustic based record, it’s the more experimental tracks that tend to be the problem, as sometimes Arborise just doesn’t know when to stop. To say that the closing epic of Feet In The Sea, Head In The Stars is a challenge is being polite….This is not a bad album; Dan Arborise is a first class guitarist, reasonable vocalist and clearly a studio wizard. However, it is a tad dull in places, and frankly very self indulgent in others. It could go down very well at dinner parties in Islington.” – musicnews.com

“The best track for me has to be ‘Feet In The Sea, Head In The Stars’. I can clearly see the direction being taken with this song, and quite enjoyed the ambient/ethereal feel to the music…. I don’t think it needed a lyric as it stands up on it’s own as an instrumental track, but it was definitely a highlight of the album. Saving the best till last..” – UKMusic

I’m currently taking a wee summer break from ‘Dan Arborise’ music as we know it, exploring other avenues of sound… perhaps an album will arise from these sonic meanderings who knows! :) Also looks like it might be ‘au revoir’ to North Devon, we shall see… The album is done, time to move on :)

Dan Arborise – Back to Earth (and the South)

Thursday, August 20th, 2009
Happy May Day and Beltane-ous Greetings!

Well what a voyage that was! Too many adventures (ups & downs) to go into i could write a book! :)

Making bread in a gale, swimming (!) under the shadow of the most northerly munro, communing with the puffins before playing in the shadow of a lighthouse, hanging out (literally) from ancient pines in a hammock in Glen Affric, sitting by seals as they jumped out of the water, endless mountains from the top of Carn Eighe, lying in the sun on the whitest sand in Assynt, discovering Moidart, not seeing dolphins on Loch Carron but what a boat trip….

All those who came to the gigs – thankyou – you stars! And all those who bought t-shirts – extra stars :) … I really enjoyed the shows, hopefully you did too…

Ralph did! thanks ralph
