More Than You EP

“Even if you are only lucky enough to catch five minutes of Laki Mera’s set, it’s still plenty of time to know that you’re watching something wonderful.”The Skinny

“a sound that falls somewhere between the whispered minimalism of the XX and the glitchy percussion and abrasive electronica that characterised Portishead’s recent work..Donnelly is ever the focal point and she manages a charming vulnerability a la Bjork while retaining control of each song..a performer who is naturally captivating”The Line of Best Fit

Emerging from the hotbed of diverse musical scenes that Glasgow offers Laki Mera merge electronic and acoustic to create their own particular style of music. They take their name from ‘the Chimera’, an illusion, a fleeting glimpse of a reality beyond.

Fronted by the ‘angel voiced’ Laura Donnelly, her spine chilling vocals layer over tight glitchy dark beats sounds and pumping bass, accompanied by an array of acoustic instruments, an undulating, rhythmic, floating, powerful, spacious, energetic sound. Sweeping electronic synths, hazy strings and drum beats merge into a pristine glistening sound, almost neo-classical at one end and at another maintaining a strong pop edge which has drawn the band critical comparisons with a diverse range of acts including the Cocteau Twins, Massive Attack, XX, Portishead and Ryuichi Sakamoto.

The More Than You EP serves as a tantalising insight into the band’s debut full length, The Proximity Effect, due for release later this year. All three songs feature on this album, and serve as an illustration of Laki Mera’s diversity – from the pristine electronic pop of More Than You, to the sultry, atmospheric Crater, to glorious instrumental Pollok Park.

“they sound like Laki Mera and that’s rare for a band to sound different enough to stand out”all gigs.co.uk

“It serves as a suitably tantalising showcase of this Glaswegian foursome’s skill in producing somewhat chaotic and unsettling pieces of music. The contrast of the pure child-like vocals, restrained by overtly simplified melodies, and the complicated and discomfiting music, layered and looped to produce something truly arresting, is stark throughout”8/10, The 405

“Newly signed Scottish band, Laki Mera, captured the audience. The full band, fronted by the brilliantly talented singer, Laura Donnelly, moulded effortlessly into the scene, balancing intimacy with lifts of driving drumbeats and atmospheric electronica. The two drum number Onion Machine had the venue bouncing, whilst the quieter moments, like the hauntingly beautiful final number Reverberation were graciously swallowed by a crowd edging ever closer to the stage”In The Mix
